"Another early scene at Newmarket. Although Newmarket Heath is a huge open space, there are plenty of of 'coverts' or small woods and lines of trees which serve as windbreaks. The most typical tree of the area is the beech - my favourite to paint. I spotted a small group of riders winding their through a wood on their way to the 'Line' gallops. It was very early Spring and a glorious bright morning, but very cold. The riders are well wrapped up and I liked the bare trunks of the trees and the shadows of the branches falling across them and across the horses. In pictures like these I see horses and riders as figures in a landscape - they are simply a part of it, rather than the subject with a background." |
