| "This picture was a private
commission and I enjoyed painting one of my favourite horses of the time.
Warning was not a big horse but very neat and as a three year old he proved
to be a top miler. In fact, he was Champion Colt of his age. His major
victories came in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Sussex Stakes
at Goodwood and The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
I have painted him at Goodwood. It was a beautiful sunny day but as the horses came into the straight, the sun was partially obscured by a cloud throwing the Downs into a patchwork of sun and shade, hence the lighting in this picture." |
