"This was the second commission that I had to paint Chief Singer. I had already painted him winning the July Cup so I chose to show him at Goodwood where he won the Sussex Stakes. It provides such a spectacular backdrop for any picture that it would be hard to find a better setting for a magnificent thoroughbred such as Chief Singer. He was a wonderful looking horse, almost black and he had a terrific stride. In this picture I have chosen to show him at the point of gallop where the horse's body is suspended momentarily in mid air with the Downland landscape falling away behind him, hopefully creating quite a spectacular image." |
