"This print is a simple action racing picture of one of the outstanding horses of the 1980s. In fact, Mtoto was European Racehorse of the Year in 1988. He reached racing maturity as a four year old and his main victories came in the Group One Eclipse Stakes (in successive years) when he beat the Derby Winner Reference Point in 1987. In 1988 he was an impressive winner of the King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and he was rather unlucky to be beaten by a fast diminishing "neck" by Tony Bin in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe.

He was a lovely looking horse with a wonderful stride and I have tried to convey this in this painting. His jockey was Michael Roberts, crouched low as always and I chose a low groundline to accentuate this dramatic angle against the sky."
