"The Third Degree"
by
Richard Pitman

I admit that I am probably not the best person to review a book like this presumably set in the Dick Francis mould - since I have never liked his novels! However, one does have a duty to perform and in many ways I found this an enjoyable read.

"The Third Degree" is part of the continuing saga of jockey Eddie Malloy who seems to lead a colourful life, to say the least, with the seemingly obligatory criminal element of the racing world.

Richard Pitman's inside knowledge of the world of racing serves him well and does give this story a touch of authenticity. I found the fraudulent schemes quite ingenious, especially the use of technology to ‘change' the results of close photo finishes for example!

Maybe I have a slightly squeamish nature but I must admit that I found the reaction of the thwarted criminals unnecessarily gruesome... still, no doubt this is all par for the course to some.

Naturally there is a romantic thread to the story, although there is no inevitability about its conclusion. There is a further dimension added to the story by Eddie's long lost brother which brings a more humane dimension to the story.

Richard Pitman certainly shows himself capable of writing a complex plot and sustaining interest throughout and at a fast pace.

Maybe one day he will write the novel that racing is crying out for... and which no-one writes because they seem to feel they have to follow the path of others... with its great historical background and wide spectrum of diverse characters (both human and equine) and with all its trials, tragedies and moments of glory, I can't help feeling that racing offers the would-be novelist almost limitless potential for a book of lasting literary merit. I certainly look forward to reviewing such a book in the future...

In the meantime, "The Third Degree" will entertain many and is the ideal companion to take on a plane or train journey.
