"This picture is one of
a trio of paintings scenes at Goodwood racecourse which are all together
in the private collection of Mr B.W. Turner.
Goodwood must be one of the most scenically beautiful racecourses in the world! It is wonderful to watch racing taking place looking out over the panoramic view of the Downs from the Grandstand. However, I have found it equally enjoyable to walk around the course on a lovely day and to watch the racing from all points of the course. There is something wonderful about seeing the horses arrive down at the start and to listen to the chatter of the jockeys as the horses mill around. It seems a different world from the hustle and bustle of the crowded grandstands and much more intimate as a result. The straight course at Goodwood is bordered by a distinctive stonewall and before the great storm of 1987 (I think) there were some beautiful beech trees there too. Sadly, they were nearly all blown down in the storm so the five furlong start at Goodwood will not look like this again for many years to come." |
