"For sometime I had been thinking about painting a really frosty morning. I love such mornings as they look and feel so crisp and the shapes of the trees and grasses are accentuated. On a sunny morning the colours are quite wonderful with blue shadows and the golden/pink sunshine touching the grass stems and branches. I thought a grey horse would be the ideal subject or focal point for the picture because it would reflect the warm tones of the sunshine so well. From this thought it was a natural progression to use 'Desert Orchid' as the star of the picture. He was trained in the very scenic area of Whitsbury which, with its rolling hills, suited my pictorial needs perfectly. As the painting progressed, I decided additional horses were needed to balance the picture and so I added two: 'Barnbrook Again' and 'Floyd' who were also in training with David Elsworth at the time.
