"This was my second painting of Desert Orchid and shows the horse at Sandown during the marvellous race for the Whitbread Gold Cup which he won in 1988 described by Lord Oaksey as "the perfect horse race". I was standing by the second last fence which the runners jump three times during the course of the race and as Desert Orchid led the whole way I had a marvellous vantage point to see his spring heeled jumping. In this picture he has 'stood off' as usual and is about to land over the fence (which is partly a grassy bank on the landing side so may not appear to be high as usual). He looked at his best in the lovely spring sunshine and it was a wonderful occasion, one of the best I have experienced on a racecourse." |
