"Derby Day in 1997 seemed
to have recaptured its former atmosphere and 'buzz' - the weather and
going were perfect and the race turned out to be as thrilling as any in
its long history. The hot favourite Entrepreneur failed to reproduce his
best form but the game and consistent Benny The Dip (on the right in the
painting) made his move early in the straight and apparently had the rest
of the field beaten. Suddenly, Silver Patriarch (on the left), who had
been almost struggling to keep pace earlier, began a storming run. He
seemed to eating up the ground and he may actually have headed Benny The
Dip just before the line but Benny would not be denied and fought back
to win by a short head.
Within minutes I had made my first drawing of that terrific finish and I particularly liked the idea of painting the moment that the silver grey horse and the nearly black one passed the post together." |
