This painting epitomises summer to me. I spent several lovely warm afternoons sitting in a luxuriant meadow (full of long grasses blowing gently in the breeze) observing two mares and their foals - it was quite idyllic.

I felt I wanted to concentrate on one of the foals and allowed him to take 'centre stage'. He has a lovely face and is just beginning to lose his baby coat and the first signs of his emerging grey colour can be seen on his nose."
