"I have tried for years
to successfully paint mares and foals. Field studies though have proved
unfailingly difficult since foals and youngsters are by nature extremely
curious and will stand for ages breathing down one's neck, nibbling at
clothing or any other items that I have on my person! Hence the title......this
colt foal was quite happy to leave his mother's side to come and investigate
me......
This painting epitomises summer to me. I spent several lovely warm afternoons sitting in a luxuriant meadow (full of long grasses blowing gently in the breeze) observing two mares and their foals - it was quite idyllic. I felt I wanted to concentrate on one of the foals and allowed him to take 'centre stage'. He has a lovely face and is just beginning to lose his baby coat and the first signs of his emerging grey colour can be seen on his nose." |
