"This scene
depicts a hot summer's morning on John Dunlop's gallops at Arundel. I
had to pay a couple of visits to the yard in connection with a commission
to paint a horse then in training with John Dunlop and this gave me the
opportunity to see the horses returning after exercise.
The park is part of the grounds of Arundel Castle and is a wonderful spot, secluded from the outside world and surrounded by many trees, some of which were obviously very old. As I am as passionate about trees as I am about horses, I had the idea of using them as a dramatic background to the figures of the horses and riders walking towards them. I particularly tried to capture the light of the mid summer day, with the strong sunshine beating down on the horses and creating lovely blue shadows to set off the hot colours in the foreground." |
