Owner: Anne Duchess of Westminster. Trainer: Tom Dreaper Considered by many to be the greatest steeplechaser of all time Arkle's superiority over his contemporaries was such that the handicapper had to compile extended handicaps to give his rivals any chance of winning. Mill House was the top English chaser of his day but despite beating Arkle in the 1963 Hennessy Gold Cup it was the only occasion when Mill House was victorious. He had been held in such high regard that it simply elevated Arkle's reputation even higher. Arkle proceeded to beat Mill House with regularity and reigned supreme in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and other top races. Arkle was the winner of 27 races in total but his career was tragically cut short with an injury in the King George IV 'Chase of 1996 after which he enjoyed a few year's retirement at his owner's farm.
