"The paintings are excellent." |

"This painting was commissioned
to be the centrepiece of an exhibition of my work at the Doncaster Museum
and Art Gallery in September 1990, timed to coincide with the St. Leger
meeting. As the St. Leger Stakes is the oldest classic horse race in the
world, I felt it important to reflect its history in the painting. I therefore
chose to depict some of the outstanding horses to have run in the race
in the last twenty years - horses which I had seen and particularly admired.
I hoped to capture these horses in some way for future generations to look back on. However, I still wanted to create a natural composition which hopefully could be enjoyed in its own right. I therefore developed the idea of including my selection of horses within the setting of Doncaster racecourse as if they were naturally assembled. I chose to depict the horses arriving down at the start, just after they had cantered past the stands as this also gave me the opportunity of painting the old stand in the background. The horses depicted (from left to right) are Oh So Sharp, Bustino, Dunfermiline, the great Nijinsky, Sun Princess, Reference Point, Moon Madness and Commanche Run. This impressive roll-call consists of horses which were outstanding performers of their generation and who won other top class races apart from the St. Leger. The horse that really stands out though is the incomparable Nijinsky. At his best he was quite simply all that one could dream a racehorse should be and I was delighted to have the opportunity to pay him some small homage. " |
