Report - Ecumad '98

Campo de las Naciones, Madrid, December 1998

by Richard Lüst

Competitors in a showing class.
Spain's two major horse shows take place each year in Madrid (ECUMAD) and in Sevilla (SICAB). Many National and regional horse shows are held throughout Spain each month, but the organisers of both ECUMAD and SICAB vie each year for the top accolade and the title 'Championship of Spain'. This year the champions of each region competed for the top awards at ECUMAD 98.

Fewer horses attend ECUMAD than SICAB, but the quality is high, as only the champions of each region in Spain may attend for what the organisers call the 'Championship of Spain', a logical claim considering the regional champions compete together.

Held at the Campo de las Naciones, the exhibition halls are modern and spacious, with two arenas for the horse events and a really extensive range of trade stands, about as many as you will find at Sicab, selling everything remotely connected with horses, riding and driving. Horse showing goes on each day in one arena, while another arena has the ridden classes and other horse events, from 9am to 8pm. This year these included many levels of dressage, indoor polo, horseball, demonstrations with the Garrocha, horse back hare coursing (imitation hares!), jumping, plus several quadrilles and musical rides. Madrid's mounted police performed an impressive musical ride, with 24 horses and riders sedately cantering through a number of very complex manoeuvres. There were daily demonstrations of Rejoneo, with some of Spain and Portugal's best mounted bullfighters û no bulls were killed û including a display by the 8 year old son of Joao Moura which would have put many older riders to shame ! Definitely a rider to look out for in the future.

A high quality Doma Vaquera competition took place on Saturday for Spain's regional champion riders and although unfortunately Rafael Romßn Postigo, the 1998 Champion of Spain, did not compete, riders included:

Jose Tirado Cerrada, riding Naipe (Sub-Champion of Spain).
Emilio Gutierrez Diaz, riding Tango (Champion C.A.M.),
Rafael Barril Nunez, riding Cerezo (Champion of Extremadura),
Tomas Rosa Peree, riding Adorador (Champion of Valencia '97).
Isidoro Perez Gonzalez, riding Garbey (Champion Cast.Leon).
Jesus Corao Sebastian, riding Prince (Champion Aragon).
Francisco Tineo, riding Coqueta (Champion Andalucia).
Juan Barruecos Martinez, riding Favorito (Champion Castilla la Mancha).
Olivier Boutaud, riding Una de Mayo (Champion of France).
Unfortunately Juan Ordinaga and Bucanero, Champions of Valencia region, were unable to make the competition at the last moment.

The competition between these nine top classs riders and their horses was fierce and enjoyed a large, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable audience. Not surprisingly Snr Jose Tirado Cerrada, Spain's 1998 Sub-Champion Doma Vaquera rider, won the event and after his masterful performance it left those who had never seen Spain's Champion of 1998 Rafael Roman Postigo, at earlier competitions throughout the year, wondering just how good a rider he must be, considering the superb performance that the Sub-Champion, Jose Cerrada, had enthralled the audience with.

Like SICAB, ECUMAD is very much an international show where friends and associates in the horse world from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, USA, all over Europe and of course Spain, meet each year in a friendly and professional atmosphere.
