Book Review
The Working Horse Manual
Edited by Diana Zeuner
Farming Press £24.95 + £2.95
I am certain that Deborah Bragg (author of Greater
Than All Things) would have been greatly assisted by this book had it been available
to her at the time she was training her Shire, Bella. This book really is a must for
anyone seeking to enlarge their knowledge of any aspect of working with, or handling,
heavy horses. The intention was to produce a book which would become a bible
for all contemporary heavy horse enthusiasts and the result can only be described as a
great success.
The wealth of information contained in this manual would, in the past, have simply been
handed down from generation to generation, but when tractors replaced horsepower on farms
after the second World War inevitably much of this knowledge dissipated.
As a result those new to heavy horse management were faced with the difficulty of sourcing
reliable advice and expertise.
Each chapter of this book has been contributed by a recognised expert in their field and
the text is made easy to access by sub-headings. This is made even easier to comprehend by
the lavish use of photographs and diagrams.
The scope of the subject matter covered is extremely
comprehensive including the characteristics of various breeds of draught horses; choosing
and keeping a working horse; veterinary care and farriery; training, harness and how to
fit it.
The use of horses in forestry work; ploughing and with all kinds of farming equipment,
plus road deliveries, are all covered. And, if showing your horse is your main interest,
you can find all the information you require to produce your horse, harness and vehicle to
the highest standard possible.
This is a book to turn to again and again, and is most definitely a worth while
investment.
